Institute of Medicineの略で，米国医学研究所と訳されることが多い．1978年，1994年のプライマリケアの定義，1999年のTo err is human，2001年のCrossing the quality chasm，2003年のHealth professions educationなど，医学教育に影響の大きなレポートを出していることでも知られる．
